Rubber or metal? That is the question. Anyway, that's the first question. Weight plates are not limited to "rubber or metal," but that is the first place to start to narrow down your choices. Do you need bumper plates? Or is a metal plate sufficient?
Once this is decided, consider the subcategory of materials you need. If you are going for bumper plates, would a recycled rubber-based material such as mineral rubber work? Or do you need a denser, less bouncy material such as urethane rubber? If you are choosing a metal, look at the difference between cast iron and steel plate. If you are a powerlifting competitor, look for calibrated metal plates.
Also, check what material the center ring of the weight plate you are interested in is made of. Stainless steel center rings are best for durability and longevity. Rubber or bumper plates are used primarily by Olympic lifters and CrossFit athletes. They are ideal for strength training that requires explosive high repetitions because no matter how many times they are dropped, they do not damage the body or the drop surface. They work exactly the same as bumpers but are even more expensive.
If you have ever used Olympic weight plates in the gym, they were probably cast iron plates coated with rubber or vinyl. Rubber-coated plates are fine, but they tend to be just as expensive as bumper plates and are not really any more useful. Vinyl plates should definitely be avoided.
Ideally, if you have the money, machined cast iron weight plates are the most affordable and accurate. That said, machined plates are much more expensive than non-machined plates, and in reality, they are not worth it if the only purpose is to move weights around in your home gym or garage. Manufacturers do their best to make weight plates as accurate as possible. However, metalworking is an imprecise art. Accurate weights are essential for serious training; balancing two different loads on a bar is difficult, inefficient, and extremely dangerous.
Tolerance, expressed as a percentage, indicates the degree of accuracy of the weight plate. It expresses how close the indicated weight is to the actual weight. For example, a 45 lb. plate with a tolerance of 2% means that the actual weight will be 45 lb. plus or minus 2% (0.9 lb.). This means that the plate will weigh between 44.1 and 45.9 pounds.
If you are training for a weightlifting competition, you want a weight plate with a tolerance of 0-2%. For non-competitive weight training, 4% or less would be fine.
Durability
